About On The Croft
Hi, I’m Ian — welcome to On The Croft.
This site (and YouTube channel) is my UK allotment journey: the growing, the building, the learning curves, and the small wins that add up over a season. It’s not about perfect gardens or pretending everything works first time. It’s about making progress, solving problems, and enjoying the process.
What you’ll find here
On The Croft is built around real-life allotment work and seasonal rhythm. You’ll see things like:
what I’m doing on the plot week by week
projects and builds (including life in and around the polycrub)
sowing, planting, and harvest updates
honest “this didn’t go to plan” moments (because they’re useful too)
simple guides and downloads to keep things practical
Why I started it
I wanted somewhere to document the journey properly — not just the highlights. Growing food has a way of slowing your head down and pulling you into the moment, and I’ve found that a calm plot can do a lot for your wellbeing as well as your dinner plate.
If you’re new to gardening, you’re welcome. If you’ve been growing for years, you’re welcome too. The Croft is a work in progress — and that’s kind of the point.
A bit about the name
On The Croft is a nod to my allotment in Seacroft — and to a friend who used to say, “you’re back on the Croft again,” whenever I headed down there. The name stuck, and it still feels like the right kind of place to return to.
